It's here! Finally the 8th Bead Soup Blog Party! Weeks ago, we signed up and were paired with our partners by Lori Anderson of Pretty Things. My great partner is Katrina Taylor of Is the Babysitter here yet? blog. This is the great soup she sent me:
There was a Natural stone focal bead, Czech glass beads and pearls, Swarovski butterfly, copper and brass components (clasp, beads and chain) and amethyst chips. And this is the adorable packaging it came in. Isn't it great?

I love it all, but I've been really challenged. There is so many great colors in this soup and I couldn't figure out what all to put with the focal and how to use the BIG hole copper beads. Also, I didn't just want to string the focal. As I kept looking at it, I kept seeing FLAMES! But I have to admit, I love flames. I used to have flame stripes on my truck until the stripes just became so worn looking and cracked/peeling that we had to take them off this last year. So I seem to be drawn to flames/fire. LOL I knew then that I wanted to create a bail or encase the focal with metal and I wanted it to look as though it was surrounded by flames. So I set to work finding flame pictures I liked and then trying to draw them off to be cut out of copper. I went through about 5-6 different designs, drawing, cutting out, redrawing until I came up with this one that would work with the metal and focal. But my challenge then was how to create the bail out of the same piece to hang the focal. And then what to hang it with, since now the focal is REALLY heavy! After finally figuring out how to do all that, I realized I wanted to flame paint/patina my metal, too, so it would look even more like flames. That was so much fun. I've just started doing some flame painting and was happy with my results. Here's a pic of the the front of the focal.

But now my challenge was how to create the rest of the necklace. I didn't want to add too much to it and take away from the focal, so I started creating bead links with the crystals and amethyst chips Katrina sent me. But I wanted to carry that flame look through, so as I wrapped the beads I hammered the ends of the copper wire and then folded it down around the beads, hoping to get a flame look to the links. Then after taking a class on enameling, I got out my copper washers and practiced my enameling in some colors that I thought would complement the colors of the beads and the focal. I also wanted to enhance the great copper clasp that Katrina had flame painted for me so I wire wrapped some of the crystals and beads to the clasp and simply wire-wrapped the ring for the clasp to attach to. I'm happy with all my components, but not sure if I'm happy with the end result. I was going to use leather to hang the focal, but decided it wouldn't be strong enough to hold the weight of the stone and metal together. So I hammered another piece of heavy wire, textured it, punched the holes and flame patina'd it to slide through the flame bail on the top of the pendant. I like it, but the pendant keeps sliding around, so I may have to redo it or perhaps wire some copper wire around the hanging wire in between the 2 flames to hold it still. But I'm not sure it all looks right together. I'm hoping it grows on me, but if not, I'll try to redesign the necklace. I was running out of time to do anything more with it now, as I was gone for 10 days at the end of March, first of April and then I've had non-stop company since then till Sunday the 27th. Plus I've developed a problem with my left hand/thumb joint. Not sure if I've just hurt/sprained the join or I'm developing some arthritis in it, but it makes it difficult to hold anything ( I picked up a glass a week or two ago and dropped it and broke it because of not being able to hold it) and it is difficult to wire-wrap anything. I hope you like the finished necklace.

Next, I wanted to make a multi-strand bracelet with more of the crystals, amethyst chips, large triangular gold and copper beads and some dark brown dagger beads. I was going to wire wrap some of the crystals, amethyst chips and other beads to hang from the gold chain, but again all the wire wrapping for the dangles on the chain piece that Katrina sent me has been a little difficult. So I think I'll leave them off for the time and see how I like it with the simplicity of just the chain with the beaded strands on either side of it. It uses the gold clasp Katrina sent me.

Finally, I loved these BIG hole copper beads, but they kept stumping me on how to use them. I couldn't just string them as the hole was too big, I couldn't find/didn't want to use bead caps on each end of them, so I finally came up with the idea of knotting some leather in between each of the four of the big, copper beads Katrina sent me. Then I wire-wrapped it to the copper clasp Katrina sent me. I haven't cut the leather on the one end yet as I'm not sure I like the clasp with it, but couldn't figure out how I might want to close it otherwise, so I may end up redoing the clasp/closure later, too. It also might look great as a necklace with a little adjusting and some other beads. Just not sure yet.
I hope you like all my creations with my soup. And I completely forgot to make any earrings to match anything, but I'm thinking I may want to enamel some more washers and attach some of the crystal or amethyst chips to them for earrings if they aren't too heavy. :)
For the rest of the participants in the Bead Soup Blog Party visit Lori Anderson's blog Pretty Things. There were over 400 participants who all got amazing partners and soups to create with. They all will inspire you.
If you're looking for any of my jewelry pieces or my Stained Glass, Mosaics or Fused Glass kreationz for your Home and Garden, check out with my shop, KayzKreationz. Thanks. And please be sure to leave me a comment to let me know what you think of my pieces.
I'm finally getting a chance to post about my great partner for the Bead Soup blog party. Her name is Katrina Taylor from 'Is the Babysitter here Yet?' blog.
She's a veterinarian from Pennsylvania, which is cool, since we do Wildlife management on our small Texas ranch. She loves metal work which is great, because I love metal, especially copper and she created this great flame-painted copper clasp for my soup. But she hasn't been able to work as much as she likes because her work area is in a cold area of her house and the winter there has been exceedingly cold. But she put together a great soup for me. Isn't this great? (And she kindly left out any BLUE, since I told her I'm not a fan of blue.) It contains a Natural stone focal bead, Czech glass beads and pearls, Swarovski butterfly, copper and brass components (clasp, beads and chain) and amethyst chips. I love it all. Now the challenge is what to do with it all to do it justice. (As usual I forgot my before pic, but Katrina had a great picture of the soup she sent me so she let me use it to show you this great soup.)

And here's the soup I sent her. I wanted to send her a Texas themed soup, so I cut out the state of Texas with my saw, flame painted it (it turned out a great red, which I felt was very appropriate as we're always HOT here in Texas, LOL) and riveted it to a textured brass background. I enclosed some lava beads, some hand created copper double-balled headpins, some Picture Jasper beads, some of what I call my Texas Tornado copper wire beads, a small brass clasp and a hand created Texas Yoke toggle clasp that I hammered and also flame painted, plus some teal leather. I wrapped it all up in this Orange bandana, since we were/use a lot of bandana's in Texas. My thought was she could use some or all of the bandana in her creations, but she told me her son loved the bandana and confiscated it and she may not be able to get it back to use. LOL So for all of you wondering what the theme was to my soup that I posted on facebook, here it is: TEXAS! :)

Be sure to come back on May 3rd for the reveal of what I made with my soup. And for more of my jewelry kreationz or my Stained Glass, Mosaics and Fused Glass kreationz for your Home and Garden, check out my shop, KayzKreationz.
I've signed up for Lori Anderson's latest Bead Soup Blog Party. I love these. This is the 8th one. She pairs you with a partner, you e-mail back and forth so you can get to know each other a little bit and the you create a 'soup' of beads and other materials to send to each other to play with and create something with. I've always been in awe of all the talent I see while blog hopping all the other participants in the Blog Hop. (By the way, that's a requirement. You have to have a blog so that on a specified day, you blog about your 'soup', what inspired you and what you created).
This time around I was paired with Katrina Taylor. This is her first time to participate, so I'm doubly honored to not only get to participate, but be able to help/have fun with someone new to the Party! She just started creating jewelry again about a year ago and most of what she makes right now is for friends and family. But after checking out her blog, I wanna go out, you wouldn't guess she'd only been doing it for a year. She loves Metal beads, Polymer and Metal clay and glass, but says she doesn't really have a style. She mainly just lets the beads and materials 'speak' to her about what to make. She makes some of her own beads and focals and loves BLUE! LOL As many of you know, blue is one of my least favorite colors, although I seem to be using a lot of blue lately.
She is a veterinarian, so we have something in common, since she likes working with animals and we do Wildlife management here on our small Texas ranch. She also likes to eat out a lot. LOL So here is a teaser of the 'Soup' I put together for her.
And here is the wrapping it was sent in. Can you guess the theme for her soup?
Come back in a few days and you'll get to see the soup I sent, the soup I received and find out the Theme behind the soup I sent. And don't forget to check back May 3rd for the Reveal. Be sure to check out my shop, KayzKreationz for my other jewelry, Stained Glass, Mosaics and Fused Glass 'kreationz' for your Home and Garden.
It's finally here. I'm in the last reveal (the 3rd one) for the monstrous Bead Soup Blog Party. Lori Anderson of Pretty Things blog hosts this every year and this time around, there was about 540 participants from all over the world. The basis is this: you sign up for the party, she matches you up with a partner, you communicate, exchange beads and then get to work designing something with your 'soup' from your partner. You have to send and use a focal and clasp, along with a few co-ordinating beads. You are only required to use the focal and clasp, but it's so much fun trying to use everything you receive. This is my 3rd or 4th soup, can't remember for sure. And my partner this time is Ann Sherwood from Ann's Blog. Be sure to check out what she made with the soup I sent her. If you want to see the soup I received from Ann, click here.
And here's my pieces. I absolutely loved the ceramice dragonfly focal she sent me. But I had the hardest time coming up with something that I thought would do it justice and let it shine. I finally hit inspiration in a book my friend Karla Morgan from Texas Pepper Jams lent me about multi-strand necklaces. (You have to check out their pepper jams. They're to die for! And she's also participating in this 3rd reveal for the BSBP, so see what she made with her soup.) So here is my Floating Free necklace with the dragonfly focal. This was my first time trying to texture, patina and create my own bale from copper strip wire and then rivet it to the focal. I was terrified I'd break the focal while trying to rivet. But I think it turned out great. I used the ribbon Ann sent me, the focal, and a few of the green discs she sent. And here's a pair of earrings made with some more of the green discs and the big hole beads used in the necklace.
Next up, is my Sweetheart necklace made with the pink and white freshwater pearls Ann sent me and the wonderful blingy clasp she sent. I thought it went very well and matched wonderfully with the shell focal I had and the Pink Rhodondite puff beads as well as some pewter beads I had in my stash.
So there you have it. My 3 pieces for the BSBP reveal. I'm still working on some earrings to match the second necklace and an idea for the wire knitz Ann sent me, plus the cute little pewter flower beads. I've never worked with wire knitz before, so I'm having a little bit of a hard time getting my idea to work. Be sure to check out all the participants for the third reveal here on Lori's blog, Pretty Things. She also has links to the first 2 reveals if you haven't had a chance to check them out yet. These pieces will probably be available in my shop, KayzKreationz shortly.
A couple of weeks ago, I received my bead soup from my partner Ann Sherwood, for Lori Anderson's 7th Bead Soup Blog Party. It took me a while to get pictures of it so I could post it here. Here's what Ann sent me. This wonderful ceramic Dragonfly focal. She couldn't remember the artist. I love dragonfly's. Plus the great Swarovski beads, 5 each of 3 different colors, this gorgeous blingy pewter toggle clasp, these great pewter flower beads and 2 hole connectors, this strand of tourmaline (I also LOVE tourmaline),these pearls, plus this great ribbon and wire knitz. I've never worked with wire knitz and really like the look of it, but not sure how to use it. Isn't it a great soup? The only problem is, I'm having the dickens of a time, figuring out what I want to do with it. I love them all, I'm just not liking any of my designs. I've google online several times, trying to figure out what/how to work with the wire knitz. I've come up with several designs for the focal, but nothing is really coming together. And I'm running out of time. I have to use the focal and the clasp and my reveal is the 13th of April. So stay tuned and see if I get past my design block with this wonderful soup and what comes of it.

And here's what I sent Ann. She said she loved it. Be sure to watch her blog to see what she creates with the soup I sent her, Ann's Blog.
And if you're looking for some of my Stained Glass, Mosaics or Fused Glass designs for your Home or Garden, check out my shop, KayzKreationz. You'll also find some of mine and my mom's beaded, wire-wrapped jewelry there, like this great Boot Jewelry with these Jasper stones.
Yay! I'm participating in Lori Anderson's 7th Bead Soup Blog party. I got my notice of my partner last week. It's Ann Sherwood from Wisconsin. To find out more about her, check out her blog, Ann's Blog. I had already started putting some soup to simmer on the stove, but wanted to check with her that there went any ingredients she just couldn't handle or wouldn't enjoy. She assured me she was up for pretty much anything. So I put the finishing touches/spices in the soup and got it mailed off to her last week. If everything goes right with the Post Office (LOL) it should be arriving at her house today. Her soup to me is also scheduled to be delivered today. But knowing my post office, that's a big IF. They sometimes decide packages won't fit in my LARGE mailbox without even trying and just leave me a message that I have a package waiting for me in town, 12-15 miles away. So we'll see when I go up the road to the main road to check my mail this afternoon. Hopefully it will be there for me to sample. Stay tuned for all the reveals. This party was so large Lori had to divide it into 3 reveals. I'm in the last reveal in April. Check the button on the left of my blog for the 3 reveal dates. There was over 500 participating in the Blog Hop party, plus some participating on Facebook because they don't have blogs. It's a blast. There's tons of awesome designers and designs in these parties. Lastly, here's a peek at the soup I sent Ann.

With the release of Lori Anderson's new book Bead Soup-32 Projects (for my review of her book, click here) Kalmbach books asked Bead shops across the country to send in 'Soup' mixes of a focal bead, a clasp and some coordinating beads to go with it. Then they asked for jewelry designers to sign up and drew names to send these soups to. I was fortunate enough to get a soup mix and it came from Wired Up Beads in Texas! Yay! We were to take that soup and create a piece of jewelry or more from it, using at least the focal and the clasp. We could use just their beads or we could raid our stash and add to it. This is the soup I got from Wired Up Beads. Isn't it great? The focal is one from Patti Bullard at Wired Up Beads.

I chose to use only the beads they sent me and added chain and fiber from my stash. This was my first time making a Kumihimo braid. I found 8 different strands of fiber/yarn that I thought would compliment these beads and went to work. It wasn't long enough, however, so I capped it off, after winding some smaller chain around it and attached it to the heavier chain to lengthen the necklace. I then attached the Teal beads to the small chain wound around the Kumihimo braid. I then added another shorter length of chain to the main part of the necklace and made dangles with the orange/red beads and the green beads to attach to that. I also used the smaller chain to make 3 dangles with one each of the beads, attached it to a headpin and ran it through the focal bead to make my focal pendant. Then I had to figure out how to hang the focal pendant. So I used the heavier chain, draped it around the Kumihimo braid and attached the Focal to it. I used the end caps for the Kumihimo braid to make a pair of earrings, hanging one each of the 3 beads on the small chain again and running through the bead caps to the earwire. Although it didn't really come out as I envisioned it, I think I like it. My mother said she thinks it's gorgeous, except that my focal reminds her of a 'fishing lure'! LOL Didn't really expect that. What do you think of my Bead Soup Necklace and earrings? I think I have enough beads to make a dangle/charm bracelet to go with it. Thanks for stopping by. This set will be showing up in my Etsy shop KayzKreationz before long, unless it sells before I get it listed. I've had some interest in it. And for Stained Glass, Mosaics or Fused Glass Kreationz for your Home or Garden, stop by my shop, KayzKreationz. Plus you can go to Kalmbach's Facebook page and vote for your favorite piece. The winner gets prizes.
Thanks for stopping by and all your lovely comments.

I recently received Lori Anderson's new book Bead Soup-32 Projects Show What Happens when 26 Beaders Swap Their Stash, from Kalmbach books. It's a great book. Lori started with the Bead Soup Blog Party basically by accident back in about December 2010. She decided to see if people would want to swap bead stashes and create, preferably with things they hadn't or wouldn't have chosen to use to challenge themselves and then blog about it. Since then it's grown to over 400 participants this last summer. I have gotten to participate in 2 of those Bead Soup Bog Parties. They are fantastic and cause you to really challenge yourself to create something you might not have otherwise. This book is written like a Bead Soup Party. There were 26 designers involved, asked to swap beads and design. I love the way the soup is written on 'recipe' cards in keeping with the soup theme. Then the directions are described as 'recipes'. What's fantastic about this book, is that although you can follow the directions exactly if you wish, it also teaches or encourages you to work with your own stash and see how you can create these projects or something very similar with what you already have. This is great, since it gets us to go through our stash and see things in a different light. The first chapter focuses on the Leftover method, where you use beads left over from other projects. It moves on to the Focal method which focuses on the focal of our piece. It finishes up with the Color Palette method and the Random Purchase method. Each project is named, gives us the 'utensils' (tools) to use and then encourages us to stretch our imagination. She gives us little tips and substitutions to try. She's very thorough in the way she approaches each project and then describes it. The photos are great. In the back she introduces us to all the designers and contributors of the projects and gives us a shopping list, if we just have to have the same 'ingredients' used in a particular project. In accord with the release of this book, Kalmbach books asked Bead stores from across the country to send in Soup mixes and then asked people if they'd like to sign up to participate in another Bead Soup party to celebrate the release of this great book. I am thrilled to say, I was chosen and sent a fantastic soup from a Bead Store from my own great state of Texas, Wired Up Beads! They're in Southlake, Tx. Stay tuned in the next day or two for the reveal of my pieces. In the meantime, run right out (or get online) and order this book. You won't regret it. It will help you stretch your wings in your beading creativity.
And if you're looking for some of my Wire-wrapped, Beaded jewelry or Stained Glass, Mosaics or Fused Glass Kreationz for your Home or Garden, check out my shop, KayzKreationz. I'll be glad to help you any way I can.
Don't forget, check back for my Kalmbach Bead Soup reveal from Wired UP Beads.
It's here at last! The Bead Soup Blog Party 3rd Reveal. I'm participating in this reveal. Back in June, participants could sign up on Pretty Things blog to obtain a partner, find out a little about her, pick out a bead stash that included a focal bead,a clasp and a few coordinating beads. Then we were to ship the beads to our partner within a certain amount of time.. We didn't know what we'd get in return and then came the challenge. We had a specified amount of time to design something with the beads and focal we received. We were required to use the focal and the clasp. We could add from our stash or try to use only the beads we received. I was partnered with Mandi Effron from California. Be sure to check out her blog first and see what I sent her and what wonderful creation she came up with from the Beads I sent. Are you ready? Here's what Mandi sent me:
And here's what I created. First I made a Necklace with the Rose Quartz, Sterling Silver beads and the wonderful Sterling Kidney shaped clasp she sent me. I added some pearlized seed beads, some wonderful Marsha Neal silks braided together and a silver wire bead I made from my stash. I also made earrings to match with silver wire beads I made also. I got some inspiration from a great book by Lorelei Eurto and Erin Seigel, Bohemian Inspired Jewelry. What do you think? Did I pass?
I'm still working on a bracelet for this set. I just can't seem to get it the way I like. I may post it later if I ever get it the way I like it.
Next, I took the Mookite Jasper (did I mention I LOVE Jasper) and the gorgeous Jasper focal Mandi sent me. I had a piece of Brass filigree that I used as the bail, with some brass wire as a head pin to hang it from. Then I used some more of my Marsha Neal silks braided together along with some Sari silk from Barbara Lewis, and some more seed beads. I made large copper jump rings to hold everything together and then added a copper clasp. I also wire-wrapped the jump rings the clasp was attached to for a little more texture. The earrings are giving me a little bit of a fit, though. First I used some copper rings I had and wire wrapped one of the Mookite jasper beads to it, added a bead dangle and had one of a pair of earrings. But I wasn't sure I liked the look, so I took the other Jasper bead, wire wrapped it with the seed bead dangle and just attached it to the copper oval ring to dangle in front of it. I can't decide which way I like it better. Which do you prefer? Wired in so it doesn't move, or dangling in front of the ring? What about this set? Do you approve? Hope you like them, Mandi.

Don't forget to check out all the other participants in this 3rd reveal. There were 400 original participants. This reveal has the last 100 or so. If the links aren't clickable, go on over to Pretty Things and check it out. And please leave me a comment and let me know what you think of my pieces. Did I live up to the challenge?

Today is the day for the 2nd Bead Soup Blog Party Reveal. Lori Anderson of Pretty Things hosts these parties. She sends out an invite to sign up, then pairs all the signee's and sends out the info. This time there were 400 people that signed up from all over the world! We then get in touch with our partners, find out what we like, don't like, colors we typically use, techniques we use and then send out a 'Bead Soup' either with things our partner's like or things to challenge them. I personally like to send and receive bead, fabrics, metal, etc. to challenge me. After all that's what a challenge is, right? I'm not in this reveal, but my reveal will be the 3rd one on August 25th. I'm frantically working on my pieces to get them done. To see what my partner, Mandi sent me, check out this post. But to see how the participants in this reveal were challenged check out Pretty Things for the list. And be sure to come back August 25th to see how I was challenged and what I made. If my pieces come together, I'll think you and I both will like them. Let's see if we can trend this on twitter. Use the #beadsoupblogparty when you tweet!
